Zirconia ceramics
Zirconia characteristics
Zirconia, or Zirconium dioxide, is a white esthetic material, with a great biocompatibility, in-vitro and in-vivo. Yttria stabilised zirconia (ZrO2/Y2O3 = TZP) has a grain size <1µm, a density of 6.08g/cm3 and a hardness of 1400Hv. Other main characteristics of Zirconia ceramics:
- A high mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and a good wear resistance (Zirconia has a higher mechanical strength than other ceramics used for medical applications).
- A good resistance to corrosion and to chemicals.
- Natural esthetic translucency
Zirconia ceramics’ main applications
Thanks to its excellent properties, Zirconia is used for:
- Zirconia ceramics dental implants : abutments, posts, screws…
- Blanks for dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, inlays and onlays, milled on CAD/CAM systems
- Zirconia knives, scissors and tools.
- Electroceramics
- Orthopaedic implants (hip and other medical implants)
- Oxygen sensors
- Zirconia part for watches and jewelry
- Fiber optical connectors
- Zirconia ceramics components for endoscopy
