For the X-ray vacuum tube applications, the filament or cathode emits the electron beam, which is accelerated and targeted to the anode, where the electrons are transformed into X-rays.

For the RF vacuum tube applications, the electrons are accelerated and modulated one or more intermediate electrodes between the cathode and anode of the vacuum tube, so it is possible to amplify the signal and transform the electron beam into RF.
